General Spot Removal:

The ResponsibleCare Spotter that we provide you is a fantastic general spot remover for most spots. We do not recommend the use of "store-shelf" products such as Resolve or Woolite, as they can leave excessive residues and occasionally even discolor the carpet. If you have a specialty stain that does not respond to the ResponsibleCare Spotter, check below for additional tips, or call us at 385-8444 for professional spot removal. And remember, ScotchGard Protector is your best friend for cleaning up spills - protect the carpet first, and it'll help you out later!

General Tips:

Blot liquid spills into a clean towel - DO NOT RUB OR SCRUB! (This will only work it in deeper.) Solid spills should be scraped up with a spatula, then cleaned up with appropriate spotter, rinsing and blotting with water. For mudstains, allow them to dry fully, then slowly vacuum with a good, rotating-brush vacuum cleaner. Here again, ScotchGard will help provide maximum removal results. NOTE: A small household extractor is perfect for spot cleaning. Use plain, hot water (cold for blood or wine) and rinse the spot after performing the following procedures.

Wine:

Blot up as much as possible with a towel, then rinse with small extractor if possible. Otherwise, sprinkle salt generously on the stain. The wine will wick up into the salt, which can then be vacuumed away when it dries.

Wax:

Place a terry towel or brown paper bag over the spot. Use an iron, on a LOW setting, to melt the wax slowly up into the paper or towel. (Do not use high heat, or you may melt or damage the carpet.) This method works best on smaller spills; if there is a lot of wax and it has penetrated to the backing of the carpet, you may not be able to remove all of it.

Ink:

Use a little rubbing alcohol, on a clean white towel, and blot slowly and carefully, working from the outside in. This works for some inks, but not all. DO NOT pour the rubbing alcohol onto the stain, or it may spread the ink - a ‡ inch stain might become 3 inches!

Blood:

If the ResponsibleCare spotter fails to work, use a small amount of hydrogen peroxide (no more than 3% solution) applied with a Cotton Swab, and blot with a damp towel, then a dry one. Avoid using hot water, as this may set the stain. NOT TO BE USED ON WOOL!

Pet Stains:

For vomit or feces, remove solids first, then apply ResponsibleCare spotter or a mild detergent, and wipe up with a damp towel, then blot with a dry one. (These stains may contain stomach acids or dyes from the pet's food, and, like urine, are inherently damaging to the carpet fibers. If the stain does not remove we recommend professional spot removal. Call us at 385-8444 and we'll fit you in as soon as possible.) For Urine: blot up as much as possible with a dry towel, then apply a solution of 1 part warm water and 1 part white vinegar (not cider). Allow it to penetrate, then blot the spot again. The vinegar will help to counteract the formation of the smelly alkaline salts that urine crystallizes to as it dries. Many clients have told me that "Nature's Miracle", available at local pet stores, works great for spot and smell cleanup also! Remember, time is of the essence - the sooner you clean up pet stains, the less chance that they'll be permanent.
